Sinus lift is a bone augmentation surgery performed when the bone height in the posterior upper jaw is insufficient for implant placement. After teeth are extracted in the posterior upper jaw region, the bone gradually resorbs and the sinus cavity expands. This results in inadequate bone support for implant placement.
During sinus lift surgery, the sinus membrane is carefully elevated and bone graft material (synthetic bone powder, autogenous bone, or allograft) is placed into the created space. The graft material gradually integrates with the patient's own bone, creating a solid foundation for implants.
Two different techniques can be used:
- Open sinus lift (lateral window technique): Applied through a window opened from the cheek side in cases where bone height is very low
- Closed sinus lift (osteotome technique): Performed minimally invasively through the implant site when bone height is relatively adequate
- With the closed technique, the implant can be placed in the same session; with the open technique, a waiting period of 4 to 6 months is generally required
